Neighbors Helping Neighbors Holiday Campaign

The holiday season is here!  It’s busy and filled with great joy and an abundance of food for most of our community.  But, for some, that’s not the case. Last year, the Wakefield Food Pantry (WFP) distributed enough food for 50,000 meals just during November and December to our neighbors in need.  This year, with the community’s help, we hope to provide enough food for 75,000 meals! 

Through a partnership with the Greater Boston Food Bank, WFP can purchase $4 worth of food with every $1 donated.  The monetary donations from the “Neighbors Helping Neighbors Holiday Campaign” will thus go a long way toward helping the pantry purchase a greater amount of food. 

Last year, the cost of a meal from the pantry was approximately 50 cents.  Therefore, a $20 contribution allows the pantry to give out enough food for 40 meals to each person served by the pantry (but we will certainly take more!).

According to Maureen Miller, Executive Director of the WFP,  the lack of food is very real, as evidenced by the 617 Wakefield households that visited the pantry last year. The Greater Boston Food Bank reminds us that in Eastern Massachusetts 1 in 11 people suffer from food insecurity. That 1 could be your neighbor, your co-worker or your child’s friend in school.  

“All donations will not only provide needed food for the holiday season but also create a safety net of funding throughout the winter to help stock the Pantry shelves when food drives and donations tend to decrease” comments Mike Boudreau, Development Director of the WFP Board of Directors.  

The WFP will share regular updates on the number of meals donated through the Wakefield Item and social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).  The campaign will run through mid-January 2020.
